The private sector plays a critical role in spurring economic development. Businesses rely on an enabling business environment to become engines of growth. A key aspect of IESC's work is to improve the domestic business environment and reduce unnecessary obstacles to business and trade. IESC programs address legal and regulatory issues impeding private sector development, and we build the capacity of government institutions--including education--to serve as strong public sector partners in fostering economic growth.
In Jordan, for example, we worked with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to provide training for ministry staff, draft a national industrial policy, and establish the E-Government Initiative. Through this Jordan-U.S. Business Partnership Program, we also strengthened business support organizations to serve as facilitators in dialogue between industries and the government.
